Rosalind's assault on Cassie

In the Woods

Rosalind Devlin’s assault on Cassie Maddox interrupts Rosalind’s arrest and turns a moment of apparent resolution into a fresh confrontation. Rosalind is being arrested on suspicion of murdering Katharine Devlin when she turns on Cassie, making the danger of the encounter immediate for the officers and witnesses present.

Arrest and Escalation

Cassie arrests Rosalind on suspicion that she murdered Katharine Devlin at Knocknaree in County Dublin on or around 17 August of that year. Rosalind reacts angrily and struggles against Cassie. When Rob Ryan and the others reach them at the estate’s corner, Cassie has hold of Rosalind’s wrists, but Rosalind is still trying to get at her rather than break away. Her resistance therefore escalates from defying the arrest into a direct assault on the arresting officer.

Intervention and Aftermath

The struggle leaves Cassie shaken and visibly affected. She tells Sam O'Neill that Rosalind scratched and spat at her, and Sam steadies and comforts her. Rob Ryan has run to the scene expecting danger; on seeing Cassie and Rosalind, his relief gives way to alarm. He offers to approach Cassie, but Sam reaches her first and draws her close while she recovers. Rosalind remains in custody as the confrontation is brought under control.

Significance in the Scene

The assault reverses the scene’s apparent movement toward closure: the arrest has produced the evidence needed to act, yet Rosalind’s immediate violence renews the threat surrounding her. Her attempt to reach Cassie, rather than to escape, makes the conflict personal and direct. The aftermath also shifts attention from the arrest to its cost in the moment, as Sam tends to Cassie while Rob remains close by but does not take his place.
